EN81-71 is a European standard that specifies the requirements for lifts designed to resist vandalism, ensuring they are robust, durable, and capable of withstanding intentional damage. This standard is particularly relevant for environments prone to vandalism. Categories of Vandal Resistance:

EN81-71 is divided into two main categories, each defining different levels of vandal resistance based on the lift’s intended environment and exposure to vandalism.

1. Category 1 (Moderate Vandal Resistance):
   • Application: Suitable for environments with low to mid risk of exposure to vandalism, such as residential buildings and commercial properties.
   • Key Features:
     • Reinforced Materials: Use of durable materials like stainless steel for walls and ceilings to withstand moderate impacts.
     • Robust Doors: Lift doors are reinforced to resist forced entry and moderate physical abuse.
     • Tamper-Resistant Controls: Control panels are designed to prevent casual tampering, with securely mounted buttons.

1. Category 2 (High Vandal Resistance):
   • Application: Ideal for environments with high exposure to vandalism, such as public transportation eg subways, Public multi storey car parks, and Social Housing.
   • Key Features:
     • Enhanced Reinforced Materials: Extensive use of highly durable materials like thicker stainless steel and reinforced impact-resistant panels.
     • Highly Robust Doors: Lift doors are exceptionally reinforced to resist severe impacts and forced entry attempts.
     • Highly Tamper-Resistant Controls: Control panels feature vandal-resistant designs with buttons that are resistant to heavy tampering and abuse and IP rating.

EN81-71 is also a useful standard when considering lifts under high demand of where the use of objects and goods maybe transported. The materials are generally more robust and able to withstand knocks and bumps caused which makes the equipment more reliable.
